De film begint als Che Guevara en een bende van Cubaanse ballingen, geleid door Fidel Castro, de Cubaanse kust bereiken in 1956. Binnen twee jaar hebben zij een leger gemobiliseerd met de steun van de bevolking om zo de dictatuur van Fulgencio Batista omver te werpen.
