Oliver is een jonge en getalenteerde schaker. Hij woont samen met zijn broer, Liam, en zijn zieke grootvader. De nieuwe therapie om hun grootvader te genezen kost enorm veel geld. Oliver neemt dus deel aan kleine schaakcompetities om die schulden af te betalen. Daar komt verandering in wanneer hem wordt gevraagd om deel te nemen aan een psychologisch experiment die veel geld zal opleveren, maar levensgevaarlijk blijkt te zijn.
