Een staatsgevangenis in Florida: Bobby Earl Ferguson, een zwarte student, wacht op de doodstraf voor een misdaad waarvoor hij onschuldig pleit: de verkrachting en moord van een schoolmeisje. Hij roept de hulp in van Paul Armstrong, een bekend jurist en journalist. Overtuigd als hij is, weet Armstrong het dossier te heropenen, en krijgt zelfs de vrijlating van de jonge zwarte voor elkaar. Een serie gruwelijke moordpartijen terroriseren echter al gauw de hele streek.
