De trotse familieman Thangalaan is zijn land kwijtgeraakt aan een sluwe landheer uit een dominante kaste. Hij ziet zich gedwongen zich aan te sluiten bij de Britse officier Clement op diens jacht naar goud, met de vage belofte van financiële beloning en ontsnapping uit de feodale orde van zijn dorp. Maar als Clement en zijn team hun bestemming bereiken, is daar de machtige beschermheks Arathi. Zij staat tussen de goudzoekers en hun fortuin in, vastbesloten Thangalaan te confronteren met de waarheid over zichzelf en zijn lot.
