In het jaar 1968 staan de Verenigde Staten in rep en roep na de moord op Martin Luther King. Raciale spanningen zijn tot op hoogtes gestegen. De auteur, humanist en dierenliefhebber Romain Gary breidt met zijn vrouw en mensenrechtenactiviste Jean Seberg het gezin uit met een hond die in de steek werd gelaten. De hond blijkt getraind om Afro-Amerikanen aan te vallen. Terwijl Seberg de viervoeter wil laten afmaken, vertrouwt Gary de hond toe aan de trainer Keys.
