Samuel Lapp is een jongetje uit een Amish-gemeenschap die getuige is van een moord wanneer hij met zijn moeder Rachel naar de stad reist. De politieman John Book, die de moord onderzoekt, duikt onder bij de Amish wanneer de moordenaars het op hem gemunt hebben.
