Bret Maverick is de succesvolle gokker en Annabelle Bransford is de flitsende vrouw die hem het leven zuur probeert te maken. Samen met zijn vriend Cooper neemt hij deel aan een pokerwedstrijd op een boot. Maverick strijdt om de grote prijs,maar Annabelle komt roet in het eten gooien. Nu moet hij het tegen zijn gedegen vijand opnemen in een zenuwslopend spel.
