In de zomer van 1979 verhuist Ester naar Alta in Noord-Noorwegen om les te geven op een basisschool. Zoals veel Sámi schaamt ze zich voor haar afkomst en om erbij te horen verbergt ze haar etniciteit en doet ze zelfs mee met denigrerende grappen over de inheemse bevolking. De belangrijkste bron van inkomsten voor de Sámi is de Alta-rivier die de grootste hoeveelheid zalm van Noorwegen bevat.
