Zuid-Vietnam, jaren 70. De tienjarige Tinh slaat met haar ouders en twee jongere broertjes op de vlucht voor de communistische Noord-Vietnamezen. Na een gevaarlijke boottocht bereiken zij Maleisië, waar zij terechtkomen komen in een vluchtelingenkamp. Vandaar reizen zij door naar Quebec (Canada). Psychisch achtervolgd door de eerdere verschrikkingen moet de jonge Tinh acclimatiseren in een vreemd land, waarvan zij de gebruiken niet kent en de taal niet spreekt.
