Alex Cross, politie-inspecteur en doctor in de psychologie te Washington, verneemt dat zijn nichtje, die rechten studeert in Noord-Carolina, is verdwenen en waarschijnlijk werd ontvoerd. Hij haast zich naar Durham om er aan de zoekacties deel te nemen. Ver buiten zijn gezagsgebied en tot grote wrevel van de plaatselijke speurders, begint hij zijn eigen onderzoek. Dankzij zijn buitengewoon deductievermogen ontdekt hij dat er eigenlijk acht meisjes verdwenen zijn, en dat een van hen net vermoord werd teruggevonden.
