Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) is een ambitieuze high school studente die alleen tienen haalt en vastbesloten is om voorzitster te worden van Carver High's leerlingenraad. De populaire leraar Jim McAllister (Broderick) besluit om Tracy's bezeten prestatiedrang te stuiten door met een tegenkandidaat te komen. Mr. M. had nooit kunnen denken dat Tracy ergens vanaf houden net zo moeilijk is als tandpasta in de tube terugstoppen.
