In de jaren 1890 reist de arts Grace Burnham van New York naar een afgelegen plantage. Ze zal er de zorg dragen voor een gekwelde jongen die over onverklaarbare talenten beschikt. Door zich over hem te ontfermen, haalt ze zich de woede van de lokale priester op de hals. Hij gelooft dat het kind door de duivel bezeten is en de oorzaak van alle ellende in het dorp. Er ontketent zich een oorlog tussen wetenschap en religie.
