1793, de Franse Revolutie. Sinds drie jaar is Charette, een jongeman van de Koninklijke Marine, weer thuis. Op het platteland rommelt de woede van de boeren: ze roepen hem op om het bevel te nemen over de opstand. In enkele maanden tijd wordt hij een charismatisch leider en een gewiekst strateeg, die in zijn kielzog boeren, deserteurs, vrouwen, ouderen en kinderen meeneemt, waarvan hij een geducht leger maakt. De strijd om de vrijheid is nog maar net begonnen.
