In de jaren 30 is het Australische beleid er op gericht om halfbloed-kinderen van hun Aboriginal moeders weg te halen en hen elders op te voeden. Molly, Daisy en Grace weten al snel te ontsnappen uit het kamp waar ze terecht komen. Ze volgen een duizenden kilometers lang hek in een trektocht door de Australische outback, op zoek naar hun moeder. A.O. Neville, "Chief Protector of Aborigines", doet er alles aan om de meiden te vinden.
