Wanneer boerin Kate haar man verliest tijdens de oorlog in Afghanistan, besluit ze de voormalige hulphond van haar man te adopteren. Naast het onderhoud van haar boerderij moet ze ook haar dochter opvoeden en leiding geven aan de plaatselijke brandweer. De hond Dakota past zich snel aan en wordt een lokale held. Maar als het voortbestaan van de boerderij wordt bedreigd door de sheriff van het stadje, moet Dakota de familie helpen zich te verenigen om hun grondgebied te redden.
