Coach Tony D'Amato is een levende legende in het American football. Maar sinds de drie nederlagen op rij ziet de toekomst van zijn Miami Sharks er niet bepaald rooskleurig uit. Tony vreest dan ook dat hij op het einde van het seizoen ontslagen zal worden door de jonge, ambitieuze voorzitster en mede-eigenares van de ploeg, Christina Pagniacci. Om het lot van zijn spelers en zichzelf te redden kan hij echter niet meer rekenen op zijn belangrijkste pion, de geblesseerde quarterback Jack Rooney. Wanneer ook zijn tweede quarterback sneuvelt, zit er voor Tony niets anders op dan een jonge, onbekende vervanger in te schakelen: Willie Beamen.
