I.S. 318 is een school in Brooklyn, New York waar 65 procent van de leerlingen afkomstig is uit gezinnen met inkomens beneden de armoedegrens. Toch hebben zij het beste schaakteam van de Verenigde Staten, en dat heeft de school veel opgeleverd. Bezuinigingen naar aanleiding van de huidige recessie dreigen echter weer roet in het eten te gooien.
