Twee schrijvers uit New York - de een gespecialiseerd in komedie, de ander in tragedie - raken verwikkeld in een discussie over de tweeslachtigheid van het menselijke drama, dat zo treffend gesymboliseerd wordt in het lachende en het huilende theatermasker. De twee bedenken ieder een verhaal over dezelfde vrouw, Melinda. Ze geven daarbij hun eigen draai aan de gebeurtenissen en op die manier vertelt de ene versie de komische en de andere de tragische variant.
