Na 12 jaar in de gevangenis te hebben gezeten, keert Walter (Kevin Bacon) terug naar huis. Hij vindt werk in een houtzagerij maar krijgt al snel af te rekenen met de demonen uit zijn verleden. Want hoewel hij zich onberispelijk gedraagt, wordt hij voortdurend in de gaten gehouden door de secretaresse Mary Kay en politie-inspecteur Lucas. De enige die hem troost biedt en die hem niet veroordeelt omwille van zijn verleden is Vicki (Kyra Sedgwick). Maar één enkele misstap is voldoende om alles te verliezen.
