Melody Brooks zit in groep acht en heeft cerebrale parese. Ze is heel gevat en scherp van geest, maar omdat ze non-verbaal is en in een rolstoel zit, krijgt ze niet dezelfde kansen als haar klasgenoten. Als een jonge leerkracht haar onbenutte potentieel ontdekt en Melody naar een reguliere school gaat, laat Melody zien dat wat ze te zeggen heeft, belangrijker is dan hoe ze het zegt.
