David is een tiener die zich schaamt voor zijn adoptie, hoewel hij van zijn adoptieouders Jimmy en Susan houdt. Een ernstige ziekte en de daaropvolgende operatie zetten hem aan het denken over familie. Dan wordt hij 18 en ontvangt hij een brief van zijn biologische moeder, Melissa. Zij wil hem ontmoeten nu hij meerderjarig is. David overweegt het verzoek en besluit er uiteindelijk op in te gaan. Hij wil ook zijn biologische vader Brian ontmoeten. David denkt dat het leren van hun verhalen hem zal helpen zijn leven in de juiste context te plaatsen.
