De Britse professor Humbert Humbert huurt, na haar veertienjarige dochter gezien te hebben, een kamer in het huis van Charlotte Haze. Hij haat de vrouw, maar trouwt toch met haar om dichtbij de dochter te kunnen komen. Samen beginnen ze een reis om zo te bewijzen dat ze niet slechts stiefvader en -dochter zijn.
