De 25-jarige, geestelijk niet al te stabiele Catherine (Gwyneth Paltrow) heeft zojuist haar vader Robert (Anthony Hopkins), een briljant wiskundige, begraven. De laatste jaren van zijn leven was Robert ernstig in de war, en Catherine heeft zichzelf weggecijferd om voor haar vader te zorgen. Haar goedbedoelende maar opdringerige zus (Hope Davis) wil dat Catherine bij haar intrekt, zodat Catherine onder haar leiding haar leven weer op kan pikken. Catherine heeft echter meer aan de steun van Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal), één van haar studenten. Wanneer Hal in de paperassen van Robert een briljante wiskundethesis ontdekt, beweert Catherine dat zij die geschreven heeft.
