Hildebrand 'Hildy' Johnson is de sterverslaggever van een krant in Chicago in de jaren '30. Hij heeft genoeg van zijn werk en het krantenwereldje, dus besluit hij eruit te stappen en te gaan trouwen. Dit zet kwaad bloed bij zijn redacteur, die wil dat Hildy verslag doet van de actuele ontwikkelingen rond moordenaar Earl Williams, die op het punt staat te worden opgehangen.
