New York, 1959. Max Bialystock was ooit een grote Broadway-producer, maar momenteel zijn al zijn producties gegarandeerde flops. Hij ziet zijn redding in de komst van de neurotische accountant Leo Bloom, die hem laat inzien dat flops zelfs veel lucratiever kunnen zijn dan succesvolle shows. De enige voorwaarde is dat de shows ook echt absoluut onsuccesvol zullen zijn. Teneinde dit te bereiken besluit het duo de musical 'Springtime for Hitler' te produceren. Dat moet wel een flop worden... toch?
