Na jarenlang politieonderzoek staan twintig leden van de 'Lucchese' maffiafamilie terecht voor maar liefst zesenzeventig misdaden. Jackie Dee, die al dertig jaar in voorarrest zit, kan in ruil voor een getuigenis tegen zijn vrienden strafvermindering krijgen. Hij weigert, maar besluit zichzelf te verdedigen in wat uiteindelijk het langste misdaadproces in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis zal worden, met een wel zeer verrassende ontknoping.
