Indiana, Verenigde Staten, rond 1920. De Ku Klux Klan is op het hoogtepunt van haar politieke macht. De film volgt de oprichting van de Klan door David Stephenson. Hij startte de kruistocht tegen Joden, zwarten en andere minderheden, daarbij zowel spiritueel als financieel gesteund door machtige mensen.
